To earn ChFC®, you must complete 8 courses -- 6 required and 2 electives.

The ChFC® requirements listed below reflect the revised ChFC® curriculum adopted in March 2005.  Please contact The American College’s Office of Student Services at 888-263-7265 if you have any questions about the former course requirements or to determine which requirements apply to you.

You must meet experience requirements and ethical standards. Three years of business experience immediately preceding the date of use of the designation are required. An undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited educational institution qualifies as one year of business experience. When using formal education as qualifying experience, the remaining two years must immediately precede the date of the award. 

 TAC Policy:  Effective January 1, 2006, all students of The American College must complete all courses in a chosen designation or other program of The College within five (5) years from that date or from the date of the student's matriculation and registration for the first course in the College program. This course is a general introduction that provides an overview of the financial planning process, covering topics such as: financial planning applications, ethics, risk tolerance, time-value-of-money, communication techniques, regulation and the economic and legal environment to provide an understanding of the responsibilities and role of financial planners.

311  Fundamentals of Insurance Planning*

This course
introduces insurance in the context of financial planning. The insurance topics of legal principles, regulation, industry operations and risk management are presented, in addition to a study of several kinds of insurance such as property and liability insurance, long-term disability insurance, medical insurance, life insurance and social insurance.

The federal income tax system (for individuals / businesses) with particular reference to the taxation of life insurance / annuities will be examined in this course.

334  Estate Planning Applications**

Topics covered in this course include forecasting the gross estate for federal estate tax purposes; estate valuation principles; the charitable contribution as an estate planning technique; planning opportunities stemming from the marital relationship; the taxation of trusts; estate planning implications of retirement benefits and considerations involving a principal residence; estate freezes and planning for long-term care expenses are covered in this course.

352  Financial Decisions for Retirement**
Difficulty Level . . . 9
This course covers important areas in the senior segment of today’s financial planning marketplace including public and private sources of retirement income (Social Security and pension plans), needs analysis, asset allocation strategies, and retirement income planning using pensions and annuities. In addition, the course discusses such financial issues facing seniors as housing, insurance, and estate planning. Mastering the Terms to Know for each assignment will give students the ability to speak the language of the senior market.

ChFC® National Exam

ChFC® national exams are given throughout the year at local testing centers by The American College.  Exam fees will apply.

Format:

  • 2 hours in length
  • 100 objective questions (332 = 50 objective questions)
  • computer-administered exam

Your results will be provided immediately upon the completion of your national exam.
